Wi-Fi 7 Goes Outdoors: What It Means for Fixed Wireless

Wi-Fi 7 Fixed Wireless Access

Wi-Fi 7 is best known as the technology inside the newest phones and home routers. But for fixed wireless operators, its bigger opportunity may be outdoors: meeting growing demand for higher speeds while making better use of limited spectrum and existing sites.

Fixed wireless networks connect homes, businesses, cameras and industrial sites.

Applied to outdoor broadband, Wi-Fi 7 creates the potential for much greater sector capacity and new high-speed services without trenching fiber to every location.

What is Wi-Fi 7, in plain terms?

Wi-Fi 7 is the newest generation of the Wi-Fi standard. Three improvements matter most for anyone building a network:

Wider lanes

Channels can be up to 320 MHz wide, double the previous generation where spectrum availability, regulations, and equipment support allow. A wider channel carries more traffic at once, like adding lanes to a highway.

More data per transmission

A more efficient data-packing method, called 4096-QAM, carries about 20% more information than Wi-Fi 6 and 60% more than Wi-Fi 5 under suitable radio conditions.

Smarter use of spectrum

A feature called "puncturing" lets equipment skip a noisy slice of a channel and keep using the rest instead of giving up the whole channel.

Together, these capabilities create the potential for more capacity from the same airwaves. For a service provider, that translates into the opportunity to serve more customers per tower and offer higher-speed broadband plans.

Why Does Wi-Fi 7 Matter for Fixed Wireless Access?

Demand keeps climbing. Households stream in 4K, businesses move to the cloud, cities add cameras, and utilities connect sensors across wide areas. Many of these sites are too remote or too costly to reach with fiber.

Fixed wireless fills that gap. The question has always been capacity: can a wireless network keep up as usage grows? Wi-Fi 7 helps operators answer that question with far more capacity headroom. It gives outdoor wireless the potential to support gigabit services and many demanding users in a single sector.

Can home Wi-Fi technology really work on a tower?

Not on its own. Home Wi-Fi was designed for short distances and a handful of devices in one building. An outdoor network covers kilometers, serves dozens of sites from one base station, and must hold up through interference, weather, and distance.

That's why the real opportunity lies in pairing Wi-Fi 7's raw capacity with technology built for carrier-grade outdoor use. Capacity alone does not guarantee consistent service when a network is busy. Outdoor operators also need ways to manage interference and make performance more predictable. In the next article, we'll examine why Wi-Fi 7 alone isn't enough outdoors.

Introducing RADWIN QORA: Wi-Fi 7 for Outdoor Broadband

RADWIN has spent more than 25 years building outdoor wireless for service providers, cities, utilities, ports, mines, and more. QORA is our next-generation platform, combining Wi-Fi 7 with RADWIN's own wireless technology. It is designed to deliver up to 10 Gbps per sector and reach up to 40 km, with performance operators can plan around.

Over the next couple of months, we will show what that means in practice: how QORA stays reliable in crowded spectrum, how it guarantees service levels, and how it keeps the cost of growth under control.

Frequently asked questions

No. They are different technologies. Wi-Fi 7 mainly uses unlicensed and lightly licensed bands, which keeps spectrum costs low for fixed wireless operators.

Not necessarily. Wi-Fi 7 works across the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands, subject to local regulation, and puncturing helps you use the spectrum you already have more efficiently.

Early access is open for select partners, with general availability planned for Q1 2027.
